Mrs. Etoh: "Around 10:00, as we were leaving the bar."
Dr. Grumpy: "I thought you'd stopped drinking?"
Mrs. Etoh: "I did, but last night we had a round after our AA meeting."

There is a bar near where I live that will give you a free beer for each AA sobriety chip you bring in.
Something about that is just messed up.
You stopped for a drink after your AA meeting????? This is just wrong.
Oh Donkaloosa - it happens ALL THE TIME! I went to AA meetings for four months before I realized that I actually had to STOP drinking for any of it to work. Hahaha!
Please tell me she didn't just say it with a straight face.
Helen- she was serious, and didn't understand why I was surprised.
Hmmmmm
Guess people have different definitions of "stop."
I'm sure it does happen a lot, i.e. the drinking but still going to AA meetings. It's still a bit of a shock to me, I guess --- and I know I sure as heck wouldn't admit it to anyone, much less a doctor, if I was doing something so moronic! (Sorry, Kate, not trying to imply you're a moron!)
"One of the guys just got his one year chip, so we all took him out to celebrate."
Wow! Okay, now you've shocked me. Unless, of course, it was a court ordered mandate that she attend AA meetings due to a DUI. If it was court ordered, that I could understand as those folks have no intention of quitting -- they're going because they have to. Was it? Here's hoping you say yes.
If not, all I can say is WOW.
bb- sorry, was voluntary.
Reminds me of how I treat myself to a donut if I manage to lose weight.
Ummm. Ok. So I've been to AA meetings for school...I was taking a class on counseling alcoholics and we had to attend several open AA meetings. I'll tell you what, after attending some of those meetings I needed a drink! They were something! So perhaps I can understand where she was coming from! ;)
Maybe she means she stopped drinking in private ? ;-)
Unfortunately you can't sure stupid.
It's like the patients who sit out the front of the hospital in their gowns, complete with IV pole and oxygen tank and a cigarette in hand. Or in the case of one hospital I used to work at, a can of beer so the cigarette didn't get lonely.
LOL! One step forward, another step backward...
@Rusty Hoe: That last hospital you mention--was it a VA hospital? Cause it sounds like it could be!
r hoe- some folks have seen enough that a smoke and a brew is just fine, thank you.
This made me laugh. I feel kinda bad about that.
(love the name though...Mrs. Etoh. *giggle*)
In our downtown historic district, a church has sprang up right next to the best bar in town. I often wonder if the AA attendees milling about waiting for their Friday night meetings to start outside are in any way a deterrent to business, or vice versa.
My dad told me once that he always met his best drinking buddies at AA meetings.
And I wonder why her seizure meds weren't working? Oh, you should't put your Depakote Sprinkles straight into your vodka. Note to self...
