Driver's Ed

Dr. Grumpy: "Anything else I can do for you?"

Mr. Bozo: "Yes, I need you to write a letter to the state, to get my 13 year old son a driver's license."

Dr. Grumpy: "The state driving age is 16, and your son isn't my patient."

Mr. Bozo: "I know, but you're treating my back pain, and when it really hurts I'm not comfortable driving. My son is the only one who's available."

Dr. Grumpy: "But he's not old enough to drive."

Mr. Bozo: "He drives those motor cart things all the time at the fun park. He does fine. Can't you just send the state a letter to get him a license?"

Dr. Grumpy: "I can't do that."

Mr. Bozo: "Why can't you be reasonable?"

O M G . . .

but thank you for saying NO, Dr. G. (I work at Dept of Motor Vehicles, believe it or not!)

And while you're writing notes, paying my house payment and taxes each year give me a migraine. I am not safe during migraines, I'd like you to get me out of paying them.
Thanks

Dear DMV,

Mr Bozo requests that his 13 year old son be given a driving licence, due to Mr Bozo's back pain. As his neurologist, this evidence of deficient mental function inclines me to believe that he may not be fit to drive. I recommend that he be required to resit the driving test, as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Dr G.

Do you really have all of these nutty people as patients? You gotta be making them up!

"Okay, in that case, can you license him as a neurologist so I don't have to drive all the way here for treatment?"

I second Mal.

Maybe he'd think twice about asking for such a letter.

Chances are he won't read it anyway.

I knew a girl in high school who got her license when she was 14. The driving age where I grew up is 16. Her father was legally blind (mother was fine, though) so she was able to get her license because of that. Not sure why the mother couldn't have driven.

What are people thinking? MD's out there is this stuff commonplace in the medical field or is Ibee a magnet for the EXTRAordinary patients?

I wonder how long it took for this 13 yr old to concoct this scheme; it doesn't sound as if Daddy thought of it as Plan A, and truly sounds like he had Daddy snookered and maybe there's a little blackmail involved.

Geez Grumpy, you're so unreasonable! He drives those motorcart things on a track all the time, it's basically the same thing.

The cretins of the world believe that a note from a physician is a magic ticket to anything they want. Excuse from work, excuse from school, excuse from jury duty, disability benefits, etc.

I saw one yesterday on a 25 year old with Paranoid schizophrenia. As long as he takes his Zyprexa, he's normal, healthy, and not dangerous. But, noooo! Gotta have that disability. He could be making $60K a year as a welder, but he wants to lay about on my tax dollars. Sent him packing.

My 12 year old daughter races roadbikes legally (on a track) so not completely inconceivable :-D

Faced with unreasonable requests for a NOTD (note off the doctor) I often acquiesce but then charge them accordingly for it, which then brings on moaning and gnashing of teeth as they're used to everything free over here !

ok, if you will not write a note for a 13 year old to drive. Can you write me a note for my 17 year old, NOT to drive (do not get me wrong, he is a GREAT son and a GREAT driver) but my insurance bill is causing a MASSIVE SDH

I got my driver's license at 14. Of course that was the legal driving age in my State....

Thirteen? He'd have had five years experience if he was in this family:

Many states have hardship licenses for 14-yr-olds with verifiable family hardship situations. I don't think this reason would fly, but you never know, Georgia's made worse decisions...

Correct, many states have hardship licenses for minors…usually starting at 14 years old.
