Haahaa, backscrabbling on the phone, probably could've made a little more graceful exit? Bet he'd just woken out of a whole night of bad dreams after going to bed past his bedtime (or on 2 bowls of chili, or something that didn't quite settle), and had been drifting in and out of sleep, vaguely worrying for hours that he needed to call you for something.
