Oral, rectal, or one of each?
It's one of those new technologically advanced thermometers. Just place it onto your patient, and their temperature is announced into the earpieces. Switch bell for metric or English.
One end for oral, the other for rectal.
Simples!
Maybe there's a cricket in the bell. The temperature of the patient affects the frequency of its chirping.

Veterinary medicine is going backwards. Back in my day, thermometers were little things. The one pictured there looks to be as big as a stethoscope!
