The dichotomy at the Maui airport is striking. People getting off planes, bubbly and thrilled to be on vacation, and a sullen-looking group sitting quietly at the departure gates waiting to go home. Even the relaxed restroom picture stick people seem to be mocking you.
While walking along I noticed that a local gynecologist had set up shop in the terminal:
"What on Earth is going on in there?!!!" |
Better yet, it was the mens room:
"Okay, now I'm REALLY confused." |
The flight home was quiet. But it brings you back to what really makes your family whole again.
And that's the way it is. Aloha!

I'm already worrying about leaving my dogs in a kennel during my next vacation. I know they don't really care (they are "real" dogs and the kennel is awesome) but I feel guilty. Sigh.
To those arriving at the airport in Maui: "Fui quod es, eris quod sum."
Sorry you had to come back to reality. I hate when that happens.
If it were not for my dog who waits patiently for my return, and the anticipation of the joyous reunion when I retrieve her from my pet sitter, I probably wouldn't come back from vacation.
So would it spoil your vacation if the dog kennel called you to tell you your dog had died ? It happened to us one year. I quite unabashedly wept in the middle of a street in a busy commercial district, as we hugged in tears. Homecoming to the dog , even from a day at work is special.
The comment about the dichotomy of arrivals and departure reminded me of a trip I had to make during Christmas season one year back home to Anchorage Alaska. Lining up to catch a return flight back to the Lower '48 I thought I had never seen so many people in departures in wheelchairs or gimpy in crutches.
Yes, the memory of a dog's little welcoming bark, or sound of a tail thumping, brings it all back at how much I miss my little sweetie.
I believe a "Do Not Disturb" sign
should have accompanied "Female
Cleaning in Progress. I mean, don't you think?
Well, if it makes you feel better, lava is about to wipe out a town on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Sigh, just left Big Island and I agree with the sullen departure group. It was -17C when we arrived back home; -25 at night. (once you're in the -20s, the Cs and Fs are similar, so no need to convert).
PS Volcano was ok. The lava burned one house last I checked, and the whole town/road is closed. The rest of the island is stunning and gorgeous as always.
