Family ties

Dr. Grumpy: "How are things going?"

Mrs. Xanax: "It's very stressful. My sister and I aren't speaking to each other right now."

Dr. Grumpy: "I'm sorry to hear that. Is this the one who's having a baby? Last time you were here you were knitting a blanket for her?"

Mrs. Xanax: "Yeah, but that's where it all started. I was going to have the blanket done when she got to 36 weeks, but then she had all kinds of complications, and had a seizure, and they had to deliver the baby at 29 weeks, and the blanket wasn't done by then. Now she just spends all her time at the hospital visiting the baby, and I finally called and told her that I wasn't happy about how she ruined my plans to have the blanket ready in time, and that it's not all about her."

I assume you added a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder?

Oh.My.Word.

My jaw is on the floor. I've been the mom of the preemie with the selfish sister....I do not have polite enough comments to type in this space.

I realize it's outside your job description but I so hope you enlightened her just a bit about how much she'll regret her words if the micro-preemie doesn't survive.

Stunned. Absolutely stunned. And hoping the baby makes it and the mom shuts the door on the obnoxious sister.

You people are so unsympathetic. Do you have any idea how much all that yarn cost?

@Elli. I laughed out loud. Love it!

Mrs. Xanax would be my dear ex-sister. Absolutely appalling.

Sounds like my sister is one of your patients.

I am nearly speechless. Never have I heard someone so out of touch with what a family member must be going through.

I know, Chivas. All that work to get the blanket made, and she had the nerve to deliver 7 weeks early.

Did you remind her that a 29 week premie wouldn't need as big a blanket?

Anon @ 7:02 -- you stole my line!!
Anon @10:02 -- thanks, I totally missed the Rx line if not for your comment. Elli - you rock :)
Mrs. X -- if you didn't get that on sale, I'll eat it, finished or not (yup, I have one of you in my family too)

Wow. I think the scariest thing is that we all seem to know someone much like this -- that's sad.

Cringe reflex , I have a bad case of it. It is getting worse all the time. Really amping up my anxiety level.

My Doctor told me no news, no newspaper, no Huff Post/Drudge/CNN and now tells me skip Grumpy

Whaaa? One of the worst cases of self-involvement I've ever heard.

Elli wins the thread--perfect!

Reminds me of a conversation today in our office. One of the nurses confessed that she loved to watch "The People's Court" because of all the selfish, crazy people. I replied that my life in the ER was filled with similar people....I'll be da@@ed if I watch them on TV! Grumpy, you have my sympathies.

Mrs. Xanax sounds just like my mother.

You must be so proud of your patients for speaking up for themselves and not let their family stomp all over them. She has all this blanket stress she certainly doesn't need all this preemie niece/nephew stuff going on. Gosh. How much can one person take.

Mrs Xanax sounds like my ex-wife

Holy crap that's some self-centeredness up in there!

Mrs' Xanax's sister is much better off without contact with Mrs. Xanax.

Some people are just so freaking selfish! I mean, how dare this sister give birth before the blanket's done?! It's people like this that are the downfall of our nation.

Hope the baby is doing okay!
