Life at my desk

Dr. Grumpy: "At your last visit you tried Feelbetter. Has it helped?"

Mrs. Shootme: "No. The first pill made me horribly sick. I had every side effect I read about, so I threw it away."

Dr. Grumpy: "But, according to our records, you had me call a refill into the pharmacy?"

Mrs. Shootme: "I was afraid you'd get angry if you thought I'd stopped it."

You must be some taskmaster oh ye who have your patients quake in fear of your wrath.

Well.... at least she cares what her dr thinks? I dunno, trying to find a silver lining to this one.

She must read your blog and know you rant about patients who stop their medication.

sadly this is true, and happens more than you would think. and the helpful 'auto-refill' feature now available means that the 90 day supply with 3 refills will be automatically refilled and shipped, and BILLED to insurance even when patient is not taking it!
the stumbling point of a lot of health payment reform or efforts to improve adherence to treatment do not account for the dumb dumb factor!

odds are we (taxpayers)paid for a useless medication. I"m not saying you prescribed a medication, but medications are useless if they stay on the shelf and never go in the mouth/body.

That sounds like something my in-laws would do. But hey, they are German and old...that might explain that. ;)

Anonymous, I wish my insurance company would pay for a 90 day supply for a medication I take. They won't do it! The doctor writes the script for 90 days with 4 refills. The insurance company says NOPE! We will only let you have a 30 day supply, and if you are going on vacation and will run short by a few days you're just out of luck because we won't be paying for a refill until exactly one week before your run out. I don't get it. It's Synthroid, it's not like it's an addictive medication or anything, it's a friggin' maintenance drug that I've been taking every day for more than 15 years. Why won't they let me have a 90 day supply when that is what the doctor writes?

Bah. End insurance company rant.

Kim- Walmart. $10 for 90 day supply w/o insurance. Some of the other big box pharmacies match this, and I know generic synthroid is covered, but if you take the name brand, you may have to live with the insurance companies rules, as it's still expensive.

Thanks Sara, I'll have to check into that. I do take the brand name, at a cost of $20.00 a month, which isn't actually that bad when you compare it to the mega meds my elderly and in poor health in-laws take, but $10.00 for 3 months is a lot better than $60.00 for 3 months! I've never taken the generic version, though, wonder if there are any differences.

You might sic one of your yaks onto her. That one that you posted a photo of, awhile back...the one with the wicked-looking horns. Or do they all have horns like that?

Security word: Flumsner. If you are going to herd yaks with long sharp horns, you had better not be a flumsner.
