Today's Test

Okay, Grumpyites. Get out a #2 pencil and a piece of paper. We're going to have a pop quiz.

Everyone ready? Okay, you, in the back. Please put the comic book away. Thank you.

Question: You are a 63 year old man. You wake up just after midnight with vertigo, double vision, and imbalance. You need help, so you call:

A. Your wife, who's asleep across the hall because your snoring keeps her awake.

B. Your grown son, who lives 2 blocks away with his family.

C. 911

D. Your 88 year-old mother, who lives across town, but still has a car and comes over to pick you up and drive you to ER, and wakes up your wife when she rings the doorbell at 1:35 am.

If you answered D, it was a pleasure meeting you and your Mom this morning, and dude, you have some issues you need to work on.

I totally picked D!!

Egads, what do people think? Or, I guess they don't.

Of course it would be MOM! That hedge hog of a wife would just get on my nerves. My son, please! Why bother the poor lad.

Hell, mom is spry, and was still awake. Prowls around her home all night. Isn't that the obvious choice?

911? Don't want to pay for the ambulance.

I was really torn between B & C. B to get back at my son for 18+ years of him keeping or waking me up at night or C. 911.

How did I do?

I chose D!!

My first instinct was to call 9-1-1 as it could be a sign of stroke and every minute is valuable.

E. because I want to make sure everyone knows :P

My REAL answer was A. That is what I would do. I would call to my husband first.

But this was a patient of yours, so I chose D and was right.

I hope, at least, SOME of your patients are normal. Give me hope. Tell me they are.

the wife-probably doesn't want to be bothered.
the son- his wife doesn't want to be bothered.
911- figures he'd wait too long

Everyday that I read your blog, I think less and less about going back to finish med school. Thanks for saving me money.

Argh! Some men just can't let go of their moms. I think there is some kind of syndrome referencing that, isn't there?

Craniotomy 35 yrs ago- cerebellar tumor; bad, bad astigmatism, just went to bed at 11:30 after getting home from 2 hr commute --rinnng, rinnng! Out of a sound sleep, even. Ringg! (Why do I always have to be the one to hear a phone ring--of a sound sleep even, just a little discombobulated...

(Okay, steady, steady, back to bed, just go back to sleep. It'll be okay. It'll be okay. Okayyy.)

What kind of neural connectivity allows a grown man to think to call his old mother in the middle of the night?

Comparing notes about nighttime dizziness?

At least he didn't drive himself, waking no one. He probably would have if he could have.
