Tell it Like it Is

I've got a junkie over in the ICU, who overdosed on a bunch of stuff yesterday. She was on a ventilator (a breathing machine) this morning, but they were going to see if she improved enough today to get her off it.

So I called over there a minute ago to talk to her nurse:

Dr. Grumpy: "How'd she do this morning?"

Nurse Icu: "She's more awake, and we got her off the ventilator, but may have to put her back on again."

Dr. Grumpy: "Why? Is she still having trouble breathing?"

Nurse Icu: "No, she's just a bitch."

Do not torment the nursing staff: they can make your life miserable.

My Dad had knee replacement surgery on Monday. As predicted, he has been a difficult patient.

Yesterday (Tuesday), a nurse asked my Mom how many years they have been married, my Mom replied, 44 years.

Nurse said, 'those must have been some long years'.

My Mom laughed, my Dad grumped.

That is a great response! Just wish it were actually possible..without getting sued.

To this day I still don't understand how nurses can do their jobs!

In my long years of experience, most junkies are bitches. That is unless they want something from you, then they are just manipulative.

Ooh, I love this post. I wish I could do things like that in my job. Nurses are truly angels. I could never do their job. I'm not patient enough.

Sigh. Reminds me of the time, back when naloxone was just becoming available, when I intubated and hand ventilated an unconscious female "problem drug user", until the naloxone arrive, gave her the wonder medicine, and she woke up, extubated herself and started hitting me with the endotracheal tube. There may be "that of God' in everyone/every patient, but sometimes it's hard to see it. Then humour is the only defence.

I love that! Never mess with a nurse! (My mum was one!)

Beautiful. The ventilator-as-attitude-adjustment philosophy.

Yeah that sounds like me. Too bad we can't vent the kids and the pets (and the significant other, ESPECIALLY the significant other) on a frequent basis.

My motto: two vented patients make for a wonderful night!

I have yet to meet an ICU nurse who isn't particularly awesome.
