I immediately began to giggle when I saw the pic ('cause I'm just so mature), but the comment by Anonymous @ 12:55 really had me laughing. Definitely an ampallang. I can't unsee it now.
YOu can tell where my mind was. I thought you were making fun of them calling the gaff or gaff boom the "upper boom" until I read the comments. Sort of wondered why you were turning into a sailing geek.
Reminds me of a conning trail from a Navy guy I know. Thanks for inspiring me to yet another crazy blog entry, Dr. Grumpy. :)

I didn't know what an ampallang was so I Googled it. Not a sight I wanted to see with my morning coffee. I should have guessed by looking back at the drawing.
Well ,now I know a new vocabulary. Not sure how to work that one into daily use, though!
