Overheard on rounds

Nurse: "Have you had any previous heart issues?"

Patient: "I have a porcelain heart valve."

Nurse: "You mean porcine heart valve?"

Patient: "Whatever."

Well, that's what he told his Imam or rabbi. Jokes aside, how do faiths that frown on pork square porcine heart valves, etc.? I am assuming that the preservation of life takes precedence.

I think that somebody who was Jewish and really observant would probably opt for a mechanical valve. And in a lot of cases, those can be inserted non-surgically now.

Bovine valves are also available for those who have religious issues with porcine valves. Mechanical heart valves are noisy and a recent study showed that 25% of those interviewed said it disturbed their sleep.

Years ago I visited an older friend in thee hospital's cardiac unit and asked about his diagnosis. John replied: "I've been having pai. The doctor says it's vagina."
