Ms. Triptan: "Hi, I need to get in to see him tomorrow. My headaches have gotten worse."
Mary: "We're closed tomorrow. It's a holiday."
Ms. Triptan: "But this is important. I'm really miserable, and need something done! Couldn't he meet me there? Just for a short while?"
Mary: "No, but we had a cancellation for today, at 4:15. He can see you this afternoon."
Ms. Triptan: "I can't do that, I'm going to the casino. It's Bonus Slots Thursday."

chag sameach to all who are celebratimg
I used to have a dentist friend. He told his front office staff that when "an emergency" called, they should offer an appointment at the end of that day. If the patient refused it for any reason, game over. If you can choose when to get it treated, it's no emergency.
In the psychiatric outpatient clinic this came up all the time, but we were able to handle it differently.
I'm sure all the noises, flashing lights, and other hyper stimuli from the casino most certainly won't exacerbate the headache symptoms...
If she can go to the casino and handle the noises and lights and stuff from there, then her headaches arent THAT bad
Our dentist has walk-ins at very specific times of the day, twice a day. Someone coming in complaining they absolutely can't wait to be seen (you're slipped in between appointments), being mean to the very professional ladies behind the counter, saying they have to be out in an hour (!) to go to [unnecessary event] and saying they'll find a better place before stomping out really doesn't fly.
As far as I'm concerned, you should be one of the people personnel are happy to see walk in the door.
last week we had a patient show up for a STAT ultrasound of her leg vein. It was 10 minutes to 2p.m. We had space at 2:30 to take her in. She became indignant, angry, and said that her doctor promised she would be seen right away. Lady, 40 minutes in the medical world IS right away!
Oh, you've met my mother-in-law. Nothing gets in the way of a trip to the casino.
If she doesn't like your time table, she should go to the emergency room. I'm sure the wait there won't be close to 40 minutes!
"Also, Kajagoogoo are playing three shows there today."
"And if I'm not going to miss it for my own daughter's wedding, I'm sure as hell not going to miss it for some neurologist."
"And you'll never get one of the good machines if you're not there by 7:30 am. Last week I got there at 8 am and all the 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'The Price Is Right'-themed machines were already gone. I was stuck playing the 'Dr. Oz Show' machine for 16 hours."
"And that's the best time to find a husband who has medical insurance."
"Besides, both state and federal law clearly say that any doctor is legally obligated to see any patient whenever requested to do so. My daughter-in-law read it on the Internet. You don't want me to have to call the FBI, do you?"
"And I have a Groupon for the buffet."
If my doctor could get me in TODAY, I'd be there. Geeze, what is wrong with people??? Plus, it can't be THAT BAD if she's going to a casino. I want to DIE rather than hear/see anything when I've got a headache, even a mild one. UGH!
"There are just certain events in the season where missing them means social death."
"Oddly enough, the brothel that my husband thinks I don't know he goes to also has a Bonus Slots Thursday."
