Wow I hope that was not a human doing the faxing.
Why are we still faxing? Can't these things be e-mailed?

Gen.... you would think so, but its easier said than done.
First, you have HIPAA -- most people agree that email is not an acceptable method of sending private health information (PHI) since it is not encrypted and can be read by anyone between the sender and the doctor's computer. There are ways to encrypt it (put it in a PDF for instance), but they are still clumsy.
Second, most physicians use paper records, so a fax isn't really a problem since they would need to print it anyway.
Third, those who don't use paper records, either are integrated with the radiologist/lab/whatever so it shows up in their workflow automagically, or it is faxed-> EMR directly.
End result: doctor's offices live and die by their fax machine. Even a solo practitioner probably sends/receives 500+ pages a month, and possibly a lot more.
Well fuck. To the first Anon - some Humans just work like robots without questioning anything, and that is actually very scary.
