Regrettably, these fine outfits aren't as easily available as they were in the 1970's. But I'm featuring them anyway, as a throwback to how REAL men used to dress, before the most important thing was whether or not you had an iPhone pocket.
I wonder if the hats were included.
I had a polyester leisure suit, and the fabric was fake faded blue denim. I wore it with cowboy boots made of blue suede and real blue denim uppers (complete with orange stitching). I looked pretty bad-ass in that and my mullet.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the top-center one the 1970's Captain America?
ReplyDeleteI had not realized until now that I needed a belted sweater.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Maybe I will knit one for my husband.
ReplyDelete"Med in Belted Sweaters".
ReplyDeleteThe sequel to "Men in Tights"?
@webhillizzy: all you have to do is find a copy of that pattern book. You can buy it right now with two others on Ebay! (http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-1970s-books-KNIT-CROCHET-MEN-S-SWEATERS-VESTS-mod-classic-patterns-/360675371085?pt=US_Crocheting_Knitting_Patterns&hash=item53f9ed684d)
Actually, I'd really like the bottom right hand sweater for myself. But it would look stupid on my husband. Assuming I was able to get him drunk enough to convince him to actually put it on.
My father had a "leisure suit" and it was mint green. I still have nightmares. Even then, I was not sure that was a good look.
ReplyDeleteI should've gone into fashion. (shudder)
One-Look at those gorgeous flowing locks of hair. I am jealous.
ReplyDeleteTwo-the guy on the lower left seems a little chilly, despite the sweater.
Well, at least the models are hot!
ReplyDeleteIf you give me the pattern, I'll totally knit you one for Christmukkah. I'll even let you pick the colour.
ReplyDeleteI remember a guy I went to high school with wearing one of these ~ the years have not improved the look!
ReplyDeleteThat guy on the left in the tan sweater vest reminds me of Giacomo, my friend the hospital chaplain.
ReplyDeleteHmm...wonder if he had a modeling career before he became a man of the cloth?
You have to admit, you wouldn't need a pocket for your iPhone with a belted sweater.
they are just too freaking HOT. :o)
ReplyDeleteAaaak! My eyes!! My eyes!!!
ReplyDeleteThe models are, of course, good looking. Ewww, the sweaters are enough to gag a maggot, as the saying goes. What were people thinking back then??????
ReplyDeleteMost of the people (both men and women) I saw in person actually wearing these outfits were skinny, and so they did look like the models. However, it goes without saying that in Alaska, at the time this was popular, one could be seen in it as long as long-johns could be worn under it, and be worn with bunny boots (my father even wore earflaps). Except for my ex-Navy high school band teacher from Bakersfield, CA. He wore aqua leisure suits over zip-up ankle boots, always lighting a cigarette, maybe to keep warm?
ReplyDeleteHave you shown the picture to Mrs. Grumpy and the kids? They're going to need some time to scour the net and the vintage clothing stores of Grumpyville to find one of these outfits for your present!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your office staff would rather see you in one if these outits instead of that old white coat on the day after Christmas.
In the 70s, I wore diapers. Sadly, I never got a chance to wear belted sweaters!
ReplyDeleteLook at that hair - feathered and lethal!
ReplyDeleteIf you took the middle sweater in the second row, lengthened it a bit to make a ladies' sweater dress, offered it in black, chocolate, or gray, I'd totally wear that with some boots! See, fashion DOES recycle itself!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just me but I think the sweater in the middle of the second row is kinda cool. Or maybe it's just the hair of the model (such pretty locks that guy has!)
ReplyDeleteMiBS: Our mission is to protect the Earth from space aliens in polyester leisure suits.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is.... Dayyyyyyammmmmmn.
ReplyDeleteDo "The Hustle!" Do do do do do da do do do, do do do do do da do do do......
ReplyDeleteWhat goes around comes around, what do you mean used to dress like that ?
ReplyDeleteBeing follically challenged I found myself looking at those really interesting hats.
ReplyDeleteI still own a genuine 1975 polyester leisure suit. (It's light brown, to go with the always popular "earth tones".) That thing has been packed away in a closet for 38 years waiting for the fashion to return.
ReplyDeleteIt will come back into fashion won't it?
Oh well, I guess I could always donate it to a museum somewhere.
Been looking my closet again, I see!
ReplyDeleteI want to see the guy in the middle, second row today...modeling that exact sweater. Portly, bald, wrinkled, bifocals. Yep. That would be a great look. He was a cutie, though, and with a real belt, that sweater wasn't quite as awful. Thanks for sharing one of Fashion's Finest Moments!
ReplyDeleteThere was a wonderful website on the internets, maybe 8 - 9 years ago, threadbare. Almost daily doses of gawd-awful patters (both knit and sewn)...even some macrame. Things that couldn't be unseen.
ReplyDeleteI like them, but not for men... unless they are wearing tights and being Robin Hood in a ballet version. I bet if you look up some old TV shows- "Courtship of Eddy's Father?"..."Three's Company?" ...they will be wearing those.
ReplyDeleteI have a copy of that pattern book! That brand of yarn is no longer available.
