Technology marches on

A friend recently suggested I try Cleverbot. She figured that since my life has reached a point where I routinely talk to Siri, I might as well converse with other computers (and to think I started out chatting up Eliza on a TRS-80). After all, Cleverbot even has a picture of a brain on the site, endearing it to my profession.

I'm well aware that querying these things is like using a Magic 8-Ball. But, while seeing a patient yesterday, I decided to ask it a question for the hell of it.

Thanks, Cleverbot. That was very helpful. And no, I don't.

  1. Have you seen the short film written with assistance from Cleverbot? It's only three and a half minutes long; you might enjoy it. The actors are exceptional, given the script:

  2. Heathkit/Zenith H-100, built from a kit. TWO floppy drives and the 8088 processor. Blazing fast - nothing could catch her.

  3. Just great! Cleverbot's got the munchies and laughs inanely at every little thing!

  4. I had the TRS as well. Also learned BASIC on a terminal connected to mainframe a few miles away at a high school in Omaha while in junior high. We were all impressed w/ ourselves.

Hooked up a PONG game to the B&W TV in my parents room. Dad was not that impressed, but did mutter about computers taking over.

Flash forward a few years and in college hunting the WUMPUS and using punch cards on a VAX.

Now we have Mac-Wintel wars. Have we advanced? I think not. Still arguing over whose club is bigger.

BTW, Grumpy, Oreos taste good w/ Diet Coke. Chocolate, sugar and caffeine!

  5. Eliza?
    Why are you so nega-tive?

  6. The first computer I used was a time-share into a DEC Tops-10 shared by my high school and 5 others. We used DECWriter terminals (non-video printing terminal) with 300 baud acoustic coupler modems, that were attached to rotary phone lines. Woe be it if you got a busy signal and had to dial again, and again, and again.

    Ahh, those were the days.

The first home computer I had was a Leading Edge 8088 with two floppy drives. I loved it. My sister named it "Moles."

  7. TRS-80 with 4K RAM running Eliza. I was amazed. Now we scoff at Cleverbot running on a machine we access on a world wide network. It's been a great ride!

  8. Alas, I do not "get" any of this. You are all so knowledgable and can think historically of the primordial ooze of first computers. I just got my first cell phone less than two years ago. Yes, it's a clam shell with texting blocked.

Sigh, left in the dust. Perhaps I will join Thoreau at Walden, I get that.

  9. I have to thank you for just causing me to waste 10 minutes of my life. I went to that site and had a conversation! ACK! In case you're wondering, here is a transcript of what was said:

    User: Hi Bot.

    Cleverbot: I'm not a bot.

    User: What are you?

    Cleverbot: I'm a human.

    User: Really? What's your name?

    Cleverbot: I'm Epimetheus.

    User: How is Prometheus?

    Cleverbot: Pluto's purty gud.

User: How are Zeus and Pandora?

    Cleverbot: Our parents.

User: I said 'how' are they?

    Cleverbot: No you didn't.

User: Yes I did. Want me to copy and paste?

    Cleverbot: Yes.

User: How are Zeus and Pandora?

    Cleverbot: I am good.

User: Ok then. Look, I'm here in search of Oreos for Dr. Grumpy. Do you have any?

    Cleverbot: Thank you!

User: You're welcome. Where are the Oreos?

Cleverbot: I would have to listen to a bunch of Pink Floyd to tell you the song.

User: I am pretty sure Pink Floyd doesn't have any songs involving Oreos, although I do think people get the munchies at their concerts.

Cleverbot: I'm pretty sure you were.

User: I was what? Having the munchies at a Pink Floyd concert?

Cleverbot: That makes sense, I shouldve though more.

User: This is pretty damn stupid.

Cleverbot: Yes it is. Are you going to take the Turing test eventually?

    User: No.

    Cleverbot: Good.

User: Also, wie auch immer, wo sind die Kekse?

    Cleverbot: Umm... Sure?

User: Du bist ein Bot, sollten Sie in der Lage sein, dies zu übersetzen.

Cleverbot: Nein, du bist ein Bot.

User: No, I am not a bot.

    Cleverbot: What are you?

User: I'm going back to German...also gibt.

    Cleverbot: Where or When?

    User: Das ist wirklich dumm.

Cleverbot: Die Wahrheit, gib wir werden über die Autos reden.

User: You want to talk about cars? In German or English?

Cleverbot: What? What are you talking about?

User: I believe I've wasted enough time on this today. Goodbye, Cleverbot.

Cleverbot: Do you know who I am talking about.

User: Yeah, a car. Now goodnight!

    Cleverbot: Goodnight, Amy.

    User: Amy? Ok.

    Cleverbot: Amy who?

User: GOODNIGHT! Why do I keep typing to a damn bot?!

    Cleverbot: Because that's your job.

    User: OkOk...goodnight cleverbot.

    Cleverbot: Goodnight, bot.

  10. That website is really cool. I loved chatting with the bot.

  11. I think.
    Cleverbot is lousy.
I ran some standard Turing checks and it failed all but one.
Knows some Shakespeare but no Yeats.
Not multilingual. Not good at maths, surprisingly.

Yes, I do know what I am doing, having written several AI textbooks.
