For those of you who survived the dreaded holiday food onslaught, comes the sequel:
The "dump your Superbowl party leftovers in the office break room" buffet.
Featuring: deviled eggs, soggy nachos, hot wings, pizza, a variety of chips, bean dip, spinach dip, artichoke dip, cheese dip, the remains of a vegetable platter, pie, cookies, sliced turkey, mini-wieners, rolls, Miracle Whip, crackers, brownies, 1/4 of a cheese log, swedish meatballs, rolls, a tupperware thing full of barbecued something, and a cookie that the staff calls "Hillbilly Crack".
I'm gonna hit the Protonix samples.
DANG, I wish I had a neurological problem and knew where you were. That is my favorite kind of food! However it is a good thing I don't have either since I like my current state of well being, other than mild chubbiness. That would not be helped by your post-game leftovers.

ReplyDeleteLayla - softish cheese, formed into a long, loglike roll, then rolled in spices, nuts, candy, whetever. You spread it on crackers. I'm with you. It's disgusting.
ReplyDeleteBut I do like most of those other things on Dr. Grumpy's break room table. Well, except Miracle Whip. And I can pass the day-old, picked over veggies, too. The rest of that stuff is so full of chemicals it can't hurt you even if it's been double dipped twice. (delicate cough). I miss break room food, I do. My belly, butt and thighs do not.

The log part is a variation on the 'cheeseball', from the shapely appearance of the delicacy. Blended cheeses, some soft like Roquefort, Bleu, cream, Velveeta are mixed with grated semi-soft or hard cheeses with addition of garlic or onion, etc. or other zesty spices (sometimes mixed in port wine), then formed in a cylindrical shape then rolled in walnuts or pecan or something 'bark-like', and served with crackers.
ReplyDeleteAround this time of year, grade school kids used to eat Washington Cherry Pie and Lincoln Log cakes at President's Day parties. (Wonder what kind of pie or cake will be associated with President Obama 50-100 years from now.) Lincoln Log cake is NOT related to cheese logs, but a thin chocolate jelly roll cake with whipped cream for the filling and chocolate icing with a 'bark-like' texture effected with fork tines.
Funny... I thought Hillbilly Crack was crushed up OxyContin injected under the tongue. Who knew it was a tasty snack treat!?!

ReplyDeleteWainglom and Lipitor, don't ever make a meal of cheese logs unless the crackers are super whole grain, and there are apples.
ReplyDeleteHillbilly Crack recipe that I found on the interwebz:
ReplyDeleteLine the baking sheet/pan with parchment paper or clean up will be a nightmare. It's ok if the toffee goes under and above the saltines. The combo of salty and sweet are to die for!
4 oz saltine crackers (that's one skid)
1 cup butter
1 cup dark brown sugar
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup pecans
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Line shallow jelly roll pan with saltine crackers in single layer.
In a saucepan, combine sugar and butter. Bring to a rolling boil for 3 minutes. Immediately pour over saltines and spread to cover crackers completely.
Bake at 400 degrees for 5-6 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate and sprinkle pecans on top.
Cool completely and break into pieces.
Someone else commented that if made with matzo, you can serve them at any holiday party.

ReplyDeleteand another public service annoucement... be careful with the Protonix if you need a drug test. We had an elderly man come in and had +THC screen... did research and indeed (it is in package insert too!) Protonix can cause false +THC urine screens!
ReplyDeleteOkay, this explains why my family doesn't call that recipe Hillbilly Crack; we live in rural Appalachia, in the mountains, and as a result, ARE indeed hillbillies.
