Stating the obvious

Last year, for those of you who missed it, a large potato-chip company had a nationwide contest to come up with a new flavor.

So, although the contest is over, there are still some bags of chips announcing the results out there. Yesterday, at a Boy Scout meeting, some bags were opened and I noticed this on one. It showed the top 5 ingredient suggestions people had sent in for a new potato chip flavor:

I want to know how "potato" is the 2nd most popular ingredient suggestion. I mean, they're freakin' potato chips! While I like bacon, it's certainly not the first ingredient I think of if someone says "what should we use to make potato chips?"

And chocolate? Yeah, I know someone was selling chocolate covered potato chips over the holidays. But even chocolate has its limitations, and I'm not dipping it in ranch dressing or guacamole.

  1. Apparently I live under a rock. And I'm pretty happy there too, although the idiocy of people generally gobsmacks me.

  2. Both Canada and Australia have had bacon flavoured potato chips. They are soooo good, but are very hard to find (in Australia)

Australia has also had chicken flavour chips for almost forever. They are good, but only if you buy the right brand.

We also had a limited run of Vegemite flavoured chips. Not surprisingly, they were not at all popular and shops had a very hard time selling them.

And as a child I remember one of the big chip makers in North America had weird flavours, like grape, so I guess looking for the next great potato chip is nothing new

  4. Snyders has Bacon Cheddar flavored pretzel pieces (no actual bacon involved), and they taste really good, everyone in our family who tries them is instantly hooked.

  5. Other countries have what seems like really weird chip flavors like shrimp, smoked salmon, steak-and onions, etc.

  6. Steak & Onion sounds good to me, though specific flavors really weren't the point of my post.

  8. I do not want potatoes in my potato chips! Why would I want potatoes in my potato chips?! I also do not want chocolate in my chocolate bar and I certainly don't want any milk in my milk! And you can forget putting chicken in my chicken soup, can't have that.

  11. Why not combine them all and make mole-flavored chips?

  12. Anonymous person who posted about Canada's ketchup flavoured tater chips... Do they not have those in the States? We've had them here for at least the past 35 years. I've never liked them, either.

  15. UK has bacon flavour crisps. Plus lots of weird ones. Ham hock and mustard, christmas mince pie, feta and rosemary. Prawn. Cinnamon and salt.

I like salted, or sour cream and onion. Around St Patricks day, you sometimes get Sour cream and shamrock - those are awesome.
