It's 2:00 a.m.*

Midnight. One of my patients is in the Emergency Room:

Dr. ER: "So, it looks like she had another seizure."

Dr. Grumpy: "Yeah, she wanted me to leave her dose as it is, but at this point she'll need to increase it. Have her go to 2 pills twice a day."

Dr. ER: "Okay, should she come see you this week?"

Dr. Grumpy: "Yes... I want to talk to her. I know my 2:00 is open tomorrow afternoon, so have her come in then. I'll let my secretary know in the morning."

Dr. ER "Will do. Have a good night."

Two hours later, my phone chimes.

"Hello, Dr. Grumpy? I was in the ER earlier tonight, and they told me to come to your office at 2:00. So I'm here, but your office building is all locked up and dark. Can you please let me in?"

* The fear is gone

  1. I'm sitting here waiting, the gun is still warm...

    Now I have an earworm.

I think both of us have dated ourselves knowing these lyrics.

  2. This reminds me of when I used to take call for the practice.

Every time--330 am: "Did I wake you?"

Or this (again 330am): "I'm tired of listening to my baby coughing."

And the father who didn't bring his baby in to see me, after calling me at 330am: "We didn't want to wake her up".

    Sleep is overrated anyways.

  4. PediNP -- When someone asks me, "Did I wake you?"

I say, "No, I was awake so I could answer the phone."

Sadly, few of them get it.

  5. Daylight savings time messes me up too.

Vision test, is anyone else having a problem reading Grumpy's flow control before posting.

  6. Packer, I always have trouble with those...I usually have to refresh about 10 times before I get one I can read. Of course, I do wear progressive lenses, otherwise known as no-line trifocals.

  11. To be fair, if she was in the ER due to a seizure than she may not have been thinking straight. I have a good friend who has 1 or 2 a year and I've been privied to witness a few of them over the years. I can say that he is not himself for nearly a day (or more) after a seizure. He is very tired and easily confused during that time.

  12. "My whole life spins into a frenzy!"

    Darned earworm!

Maybe you need to go to military time. They'll say, "I'll read the discharge instructions later and go to sleep."

Then you just have to hope they wake up before the appointment is over.

  13. True about the confusion, I was having seizures one summer (was told they were from a combination of some of my medications that lower the seizure threshold, and a virus (epstein barr) lowering my seizure threshold) and I felt like I was drunk for a couple hours after each one.
