I'd say that's 10/10

Yesterday afternoon I got dragged into ICU to see a consult. Some of the nurses were laughing over a chart, so I asked what was up.

Apparently Mr. Camp began having chest pain earlier in the day, which had quickly escalated. He was now in ICU, because pretty much any movement or excitement was causing chest pain. So they were slathering him with nitrates while the hospital called in the surgical team to do an urgent coronary artery bypass.

Anyway, in the pre-op orders the cardiologist had written (in all caps and underlined): "PATIENT IS NOT ALLOWED TO WATCH THE SUPER BOWL!!!"

  1. The power outage would have sent him over the cardiac edge, or maybe Beyonce would have.

  2. Given all the T&A during the halftime show, it was probably a good decision...:)

  3. At least his leads didn't black out.

  4. As an EMT, I will tell you this: no one in my town calls 911 during the Superbowl. But when it's over, duty crew, and back-up crew, and second back-up crew needed.

  5. The only people we see in the ER during Superbowl are the critically ill and people who have absolutely no interest in football.

  6. Isn't there an article showing that during the European soccer championship (world soccer?) there's a significant increase in heart attacks. I'm sorry I don't have the link.

There's also an increase in MIs during heavy snowfalls, so our news are always droning on about taking it easy with the snow shoveling. Teens make tons of money then.

But seriously, I can totally see post-Supebowls heart attacks (also post-NHL final games).

  7. When I was working ICU in rural Wisconsin, on the night of the Superbowl I had a post op CABG patient. He started screaming and yelling, so I ran into the room and asked what was wrong. "Oh, the Packers just scored," he replied.

Scared the living hell out of me.

  8. Sorry as a night nurse I once had to tell a pt that if he couldn't keep his bp under 240/130 and heart rate under 130 maxed out on multiple drips I would have to take away his super bowl.
