Dr. Grumpy: "This is Dr. Grumpy, returning a page."
RalPh: "Hi, my name is RalPh, and I'm a patient of Dr. Brain's. I need a refill called in for my Sarcasma, and his office never called me back on Friday."
Dr. Grumpy: "That's fine. What's your pharmacy number?"
RalPh: "867-5309."
Dr. Grumpy: "Okay, I'll call it in right now."
Hangs up, dials 867-5309.
RalPh: "Local Pharmacy, this is RalPh. Can I help you?"
Dr. Grumpy: "Um, didn't I just talk to you?"
RalPh: "Yeah, I'm a pharmacist. You calling in a script?"
I wouldn't have called on a weekend but maybe he let his meds run out and he didn't want it to look like he had stolen a few tabs so that he didn't miss a dose. Bad pharmacist!
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Sarcasma, I think I need a refill, too.
ReplyDeleteHad a doc's wife ask if he could call in his own script because his doctor hadn't gotten back to us yet. I told her, um no, that it was illegal. She was like "ohhh". We found a script from another store with refills buried on page 5 of his profile and filled that one. But seriously, sometimes I just don't know what to think.
ReplyDeleteI called my dentist on his cell phone after the holiday asking for antibiotics and pain killer combo, and yes I took it right then and there, since I was the pharmacist in lots of pain from infection. I did wake him up though, he asked to speak to the pharmacist even though he knows what I do for a living and I did make it clear in the beginning of conversation.
ReplyDeleteNo, the drug involved was benign. It was more the situation that was funny.
ReplyDeleteYeah, like the first time he talked to you couldn't he have just explained the situation and taken care of it that way, or am I completely missing something.
ReplyDeleteThat's a CYA pharmacist if I've ever seen one!
ReplyDelete(head shake) Ya have to give him credit for at least getting a refill auth instead of just filling it himself...
ReplyDeleteTo RalPh's credit, he probably has dealt with doctors and offices that take eons to call back or refuse to 'call-in' while speaking directly to the pharmacist, due to paperwork or whatever office policy.
ReplyDeleteFunny though... He probably did a *face palm* after realizing he could have asked you during the 1st call.
And he did let you call if in to him all legal like.
ReplyDeleteWhy can't he just fill in a script for himself?
ReplyDeleteHaha, nice one (alwyas following protocol! Reminds me of the time you got two separate calls from school about your twins). Unless he was trying to be smart in an obnoxious way. To New Tech on the Block, maybe I understand your example wrong, but in Germany at least any doc with a doctor's license can call in scripts for himself. My husband does it on the rare occasions we need anything minor or on holidays, or pain medethe pharmacies just need to check the doctor's license. When I go to pick it up, he writes a "private script" (for self-pay).
ReplyDeleteIt's not illegal in my state to call in your own scripts. Perhaps borderline unethical, yes, but when a MD is calling in his own blood pressure med because his doc hasn't responded to three fax requests, I don't really see the problem.
ReplyDeleteBack in my pharmacy tech days, I once called my doctor's office for a refill and when I explained to the nurse that I worked in a pharmacy, she said I could pass the phone to the pharmacist and she'd okay it right then.
ReplyDeleteIn my state it is illegal for docs to call stuff in for themselves... doesn't stop some of them though. I hate to be the fill-in pharmacist who won't fill it when their entire profile is full of stuff they wrote for themself. Ick.
in my state, doctor can call in anything other than controls. i would think the same holds for pharmacist getting the call from doctor for their own prescription.
ReplyDeleteIn Arizona, the pharmacist will question anything scheduled that looks like it is for the doc OR a member of the doc's family--found this out when trying to help out my uninsured son late one night till I could send him money for the dentist. Ended up going with an NSAID, which in retrospect was probably more effective than Tylenol No.3 anyway.
ReplyDeleteI called 867-5309, but I just keep getting some chick named Jenny. No pharmacy
ReplyDeleteIn response to Annonymous Jan 12 2:39pm - in AZ it is ILLEGAL for docs o call in/write control subs rxs for self OR family. Check your board law!
