Life in Line

I went to Costco yesterday to stock up on Diet Coke and return a video game.

The lady in front of me in the return line had one of those outdoor heaters (the tall ones, like you see at restaurants) in a cart. But it was in several pieces, scarred black with fire & smoke stains, with the metal twisted, and in some places melted. It had clearly had some sort of catastrophe.

So the guy at the counter takes her receipt, and says "Was there a problem with the item?"

  1. "Problem ?~! Uh.... no. Not after the deck fell thru when the rafters caught fire; why do you ask?"

  2. Nah, no problem. We just accidentally used it as a flame thrower.

Probably good that it wasn't I answering that question. OR my sarcastic sons.

  3. Maybe she hadn't cleaned the accumulated bacon drippings from a winter of grilling. Nothing like having your husband walk into the house and grab the fire extinguisher to add some excitement to your life.

  4. "No, this one worked just fine, I want to upgrade to a pipe bomb."

  5. A few summers ago, our riding mower burst into flames while my wife was using it. The big box store couldn't get out there, pick it up, and replace it with a better one fast enough. I'm pretty sure they saw their financial lives passing before them when I walked in there and told them about it.

Well, no, not if fire balls and explosions are a feature...

  8. Obviously he was trained by an Evile Manager™ who told him if he varied by The Script™ in any way he'd be fired. Hey! Jobs are scarce! Either that or he needs to head over to the optical center.

  9. "Yeah, it's a lousy heater. No matter what we did, it wouldn't burn hot enough."

  12. Did it malfunction because it wasn't an "artisanal" heater?

  14. On a slightly serious note - they have been banned in a few places here in Europe because they have a habit of trying to BBQ the surroundings if they have been hooked up even a little tiny bit not quite right.

This is Grumpy's blog, I am sure there was operator error.

Propane is no hobby, leave it to the professionals.

  17. Wait a minute. Outdoor heater? People heating their patios? I can understand people needing a big heater if they want to work in their garage/barn/bomb-making shed in the winter, but using fuel to heat an unenclosed patio? It seems like a misunderstanding about the concept of "outdoor". I guess I'm a stick in the mud.

  18. Outdoor heaters in towns along the California coast make it possible to sit outside at night at restaurants and home all year long - they are wonderful.

However, this one has been banned in the city of Dallas. I guess this type has some risks.
