Beware of the Staff

You piss off my office crew at your own risk!

Lunch today was from a new drug rep, pushing a sleeping pill.

She made the MAJOR mistake of rudely talking down to my staff, letting them know they are peons, and that she only deals with doctors. This pisses me off, and even worse, it pisses them off.

Anyway, her sleeping pill's claim to fame is that patients who take it get an average of 7.8 hours of sleep. As a result, they have little pamphlets with this fact, and the rep had a big button on her jacket that said "Are your patients getting 7.8 hours every night?"

During lunch she left her jacket over the back of a chair outside our break room. While she was talking I noticed 2 of the girls disappear for a few minutes.

When Ms. Drugrep was leaving she put her jacket back on, and brought me a pad to sign for samples. As I scribbled I noticed that the button on her jacket had been altered, and now said "Are your patients getting 7.8 inches every night?"

She has no clue, either. And I'll likely never find out what happens.

  2. Woe betide those who irritate the gatekeepers...those big ol' keys don't feel so good jammed up one's rear...

  3. Drug reps must be a really dumb lot. I've known since a young girl that the secretary/front office staff are your key to getting "in" and to make friends with them right away. I love how deliciously evil your girls are :)

  4. Well, i have always thought that the best hypnotic was loving and satisfying sexual intercourse with one's regular partner.... So the badge is right.

  5. Everyone should have the opportunity to work with staff like that at least once in their life.

    I love this blog.

  7. That is so awesome. I love your staff. Please buy them some donuts. Seriously if you email me privately with your office address I will send a check to cover the cost.

  8. Okay, I hate to bring this up. I really hate to bring this up. But you should not call the women who work for you "girls." It's demeaning.

  9. Ummm. Can you please find something for a Tech to do in your office? :)

  10. Classof65- they call themselves that, too.

"We girls are going over to Starbucks".

"I'm meeting the girls for happy hour."

"Sorry, Doc, us girls have voted you off the island."

I knew some would find it demeaning, but it's what my staff uses to refer to themselves.

  11. HA!

I hope she visited office after office wearing that pin, none the wiser until she looked in the mirror at the end of the day. Serve her right!

  12. Everyone knows that the front staff can make your life easy or hell. I make it a policy to butter them up at every opportunity. My GP's office will work me in at the drop of a hat...they get multiple thanks and sometimes, baked goods. Most reps have an overinflated sense of self.

They are also terrible as clients, always wanting to use their own drugs for their pets...keep having to explain that animals and humans don't always metabolize things the same. You know, when they leave, they are going to take their minimal knowledge of *human* biochemistry and apply it to their pets.

  13. I think there is nothing better than arriving home to a another Dr. G update. It's the first time I blurt out laughing all day!!!
I think your "girls" and you have the greatest sense of respect for one another, not to mention a damn good sense of humor.
Snotty drug sales reps, be damned!
    (Blatently embarrassed as well!)

  16. You have the bestest staff ever!

I also prefer being called a girl as opposed to woman (it makes me feel old)

I'm guessing she's incapable of reading mirror-writing. One can hope. (heh heh heh)

  23. lmao! *awesome*! :-)

Also, it's interesting that your staff calls themselves girls. I always cringe when my doctor calls his staff that--it never occurred to me that it might be their self-referring term, not his. Guess that's the double-hazard of having attended a women's college where we had bumper stickers that read "it's not a girl's school without men, it's a women's college without boys." ;-)

  24. Being a member of the "detail" profession for over 30 years, it is absolutely pathetic to the level to which it has fallen.

Marketers that went to college to learn how to sell wiffle balls now drive 100% of pharma marketing - gosh, can you tell?

  25. I love creative genious. That was creative genious. I salute your your staff.

  26. I am a qualified pharmacist with a Masters degree and also a postgraduate diploma in marketing. I have worked as a drug rep and we are much more intelligent than most of our so called "customers" who are all commercially driven.

  27. Melanie dear. Genius is what you believe it to be, not "genious". Just goes to prove my earlier comment!

  28. I love your staff. T sounds like in general you've got a really great work environment which has to be an absolute necessity to dealing with all the crazies. Bet it's a great place to work and I'm guessing beyond writing this blog that is your secret. Your patients and the occasional super rude drug rep and idiot doctor can make your hair fall out and drive you mad but Annie and Mary and anyone else who consists of the "girls" and Dr. Pissy too must make even the crappiest day better. :)

You sure you won't be writing a book?
